Grand Ole' Ditch, progressive bluegrass from Cumberland MD, utilizes nickel-wound vibrations emanating from historically pigeon-holed boxes composed of wires and wood. Featuring inventive song writing, caramelized 5-part harmonies, dazzling banjo, silky dobro, fiery mandolin, galloping bass, sizzling fiddle and freight train guitar.
Started as a little home-brewed bluegrass band out of the mountain town of Cumberland MD, Grand Ole’ Ditch is all about having some new fun with that old Appalachian sound. The band derived its name from an important piece of Western Maryland history: the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Canal, nicknamed the Grand Old Ditch, carried coal from the Allegheny Mountains to the East Coast during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bluegrass told the story of the people of this era, and was an essential part of their culture.
Formed in Fall/Winter of 2012 at weekly pickin’ sessions among old friends, Grand Ole’ Ditch has created a strong presence in the Mid-Atlantic bluegrass scene. After a win at the 2013 Watermelon Park Bluegrass Band Competition, the band has filled the 2014 calendar with shows that will include appearances with Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, The Hackensaw Boys, Cabinet, The Travelin’ McCoury’s, The Seldom Scene, The Steep Canyon Rangers, and a spot at the infamous Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition.
