Entomology Garden Insects Course at GC

Garrett College in coordination with the University of Maryland Extension is sponsoring a one-session course, Entomology: Garden Insects, at the Northern Outreach Center in Grantsville. Class will be held on Thursday, June 25, 1-3 p.m. Approximately 10% of the insect population is considered pests and/or harmful to humans or gardens/crops, which means the majority of insects are good for the garden. During this session participants will engage with live and dried insect specimens to learn the identification (ID) of some pests that invade gardens and how to control them. Insect ID guides will be shared so that participants can identify good bugs and bad bugs. A portion of the session will be talking about the good bugs and how and why one should want to encourage their presence in a garden. The course is being instructed by Ashley Bodkins who received her B.S. degree in Agronomy from WVU and an A.A. degree in Horticulture from Potomac State College. She works for the University of Maryland Extension where she answers home horticulture questions and coordinates the Maryland Master Gardener Program for Garrett County.
